Boundary
Fellside: FECD222

In the wake of their successful first recording Rushes two years ago Boundary proves to be an impressive follow up. Tight musicianship with a varied mix of material results in an album that is immensely satisfying from its vibrant fiddle introduction to the subtle closing notes of the final track. Gren continues to demonstrate his talent as a writer of songs and of the fifteen tracks, five are written by him. Grateful for a Home and Different Rooms are two gentle, somewhat whimsical songs which contrast with the driving fiddle led Dressed to Roll and Into the Night reminiscent of early Gordon Lightfoot. The duo’s rendition of Leadbelly’s Cow Cow Yicky Yicky Yea is for me an unqualified highlight while their lively interpretation of the bawdy 18th century song Old Sir Simon The King and soulful arrangement of No more auction block helps expand the album’s diversity. The five Instrumental tracks are, with one exception composed by Bartley or Kitching, the exception being a wonderfully tongue in cheek American Old Timey banjo led interpretation of Playford’s Parsons Farewell. The skilful interaction between instruments makes for lively listening especially on Norms Christmas and the intriguing Raspberry Bourree. Song lyrics have been provided in a four page booklet which complements this highly accomplished and enjoyable recording.
